Rapidshare Megaupload Megashares Price Comparison

I decided to compare RapidShare, Megaupload, and Megashares. Those are the ones that look the most appearing. Recently RapidShare has been changing...

50GB limit = Good
One active download per subnet = not good
Deleting uploader accounts = bad

The second one I can live with, but the third one basically puts a halt to downloading warez if it gets out of control.

I've look at the prices for all three of the main file hosting sites.

RAPIDSHARE vs MEGASHARES

1) Pricing
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
All prices here are in USD. Rapidshare prices are in EURO, which is then converted for comparing purposes. Exchange rate as of July 1st, 2008.
1 Euro = 1.57800 U.S. dollars

1 month - Megashares has a link card for $10 a month. Rapidshare has premium for $11.03. Difference of $1.

3 months - Megashares doesn’t have a 3 month link card but does have a 6 month for $25; so $12.50 for 3 months. Rapidshare is $26.81 for 3 months. Difference of almost $2.

6 months - Megashares at $25. Rapidshare at $47.32. Difference of $14.

1 year - Megashares doesnt have a yearly card but for this comparison I'm going to use two 6 month cards. 2x$25 = $50. Rapidshare has a yearly premium account for $86.77. A huge difference of $37.

In conclusion, Megashares does have the upper hand when it comes to pricing of the premium service at each site. As durations of the premium accounts are get longer, the price difference becomes bigger. As you can see the 6 month and 1 year premiums are much cheaper with Megashares. Even with the lower USD rate at the moment, you are still saving a mile on Megashares as opposed to Rapidshare.

2) Limits
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
--PREMIUM LIMITS--
Rapidshare has a limit of 10gb per day This means you can download 10gb's on one day. As far as Im concerned this is the only limit to downloading that they have. Their premium accounts at Rapidshare only limit one connection and one IP to download at a time which is a huge disadvantage for those that want to download something at home then go to a buddy's house and leech something over there.

Megashares has no limits to downloading whatsoever. Their policy on linkcards are just as strict but I have been successful at downloading from various places at once without having my premium account being banned or disabled.

--FILE LIMITS--
Rapidshare has a very low file limit, only 100mb, which is another huge disadvantage of the service. Megashares has a 10GB file limit which can pretty much take any type of content.

In conclusion Rapidshare's limits are far off from Megashares. 10GB a day is not worth your money compared to unlimited service at Megashares. Restricting users to only one connection from one IP at a time is also a huge down side. Megashares has an unlimited download service which is well worth the money if you download to the fullest; even if you dont. Lastly the file limits are a huge plus for Megashares since 10GB max for one file can save a user alot of time (especially on a slow PC) by downloading the full extracted files as opposed to downloading 100MB split RARs then unpacking them when you are done downloading. Time is money here!

3) Download Speeds/Upload Speeds
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

--DOWNLOAD--
All those rumors are false, I can download from RS at a max speed of about 1.3-1.4mb/s (which is my ISP max) and then right after finishing, go to MS and download at the same speed. It all depends on how you download.

Without a download manager, RS.com gives me 100-300kb/s, without a download manager on MS, I get 150-600kb/s Generally the higher-end of the download spectrum for MS, while RS is generally the middle

EVEN IF THE RUMORS WERE TRUE
Downloading at lets say 200kb/s through MS than downloading 300kb/s from MS still is faster than RS, since MS has a 4 hr lead ahead through wait times.

--UPLOAD--
Both file hosts have remote uploading, while they still hold the file limits.. Megashares has FTP-to-FTP (FXP) uploading but Rapidshare does not. Megashares also has a Java-based custom uploader, where you can add HTTP and FTP links in and it will upload. Rapidshare has FTP upload through their web site in the premium section; up to 50 files.. aren't many XBOX360/DVDR/X264 content over 50 files anyway?

In conclusion, speeds are the same all over. Use a download manager if you can't max out your own speed. Don't blame the host, blame your ISP. FlashGet is highly recommended for either host, and it maxes out my speed definitely. I have confirmed this fact with a friend from Europe and myself in the USA. Upload speeds may lack for European users at Megashares since Megashares is located amongst the USA. Rapidshare has pretty good speeds for pretty much anywhere; so thats a plus for Rapidshare. Another thing is Rapidshare has happy hour every so often which is also good. (where you download freely for 1hr)

4) File 'Stability'
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Everyone complains about file reporters (including me). In RS.com it can take between 12-24 hrs to get a 3gb game reported. You sometimes don't even have to post them. (rs spiders...)

For MS, there still is reporting, but I have found it takes between 7 days to a few weeks before its actually removed.

Rapidshare "In principle, we host data without a time limit. But files that have not been accessed for 90 days are deleted to relieve the system of forgotten and not needed content. This rule does not apply to Premium members."

Megashares "Your file will remain available through your unique download link as long as there is 1 unique download in the first 3 days, 5 unique downloads in 7 days, and 15 unique downloads in 25 days which then restarts at the 25-day counter."

In conclusion Rapidshare has the better file storage policy. Megashares lacks this big-time. But if you post good content, why would this even bother you? Razz

5) Rewards System
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
For Rapidshare you get points for free downloads, and every 10,000 points, you can extend your account for another month or pay of course.

For Megashares there is a new cache points system that they have going on. Downloads and link card sales affect your cache points. A quote from their FAQ explains this:
Quote:
Megashares success comes from our users. You provide for us to host, saving you money and increasing your reach. At the same time this increases Megashares traffic. We would like to provide a way to encourage and prolong this relationship.
Points:
- You get 1 (one) cache point for every unique linkcard/premium download. Some users with high traffic sites have over 10,000 uniques a day!
- You get 250 cache points for every linkcard referral. (when a user buys a linkcard by hitting one of your links)
Levels:
- Level 1 is at 10,000 points. You can use these to get a linkcard good for 30 days.
- Level 2 is at 25,000 points. That gives you $100 paid through Paypal.**
- Level 3 is at 75,000 points. That gives you $300 paid through Paypal.**
- Level 4 we will soon have a premium service providing storage, streaming, hotlinking/paid bandwidth. This will be a subscription based service. at 250,000 points you will be at level 4 and can use those cache points for a premium service subscription. Start getting cache points now!
**You will need a Paypal account in order to turn in your cache points for money.

In conclusion, Rapidshares reward system is good for continuing users and I dont know what else.. Megashares on the other hand can earn you money and extended premium service. The money can go towards paying your server fees so you dont have to worry about working your butt off at work to pay those fees off! Rapidshare earns points from FREE users only. Where as Megashares earns points from premium users only.

6) Managing your uploads
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Rapidshare has a account system (premium) where you can keep track of your downloads.

Megashares has a account system called MyMS where you can keep track of your cache points collected and all your uploads. Their MyMS has many great features like editing the description, and creating a sample video for streaming (preview before you download).

Overall I think Megashares account system is far more superior than Rapidshare's. Their lack of features on Rapidshare cannot compare with Megashare's feature in their MyMS service.

7) File Amounts
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Rapidshare has alot of files hosted compared to Megashares. Me alone would have over 20,000 files hosted. Maybe even more. But would you really want to download over 100rars for a x264 rip or just one file and you dont even have to worry about unpacking it after you are done the download.

Music will probably be my next section that I would want to put up. Stay tuned for that!

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Final Stand
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In my opinion, (not to bash RS) Megashares has pulled through as one of top file hosts out there. Taking all the factors into consideration, everything is pretty much better than RS. Rapidshare has its plusses of course, but their limitations and restrictions just make them not the file host of choice for me and I'm sure many others. I dont care how many mistakes you find in this. The facts are here and I'm done, sick of the MS bashers that just jump in the same band wagon that everyone is on.
